Upgraded Policy Center

Google has migrated its Policy Center to a new Help Center Platform hosted within the Play Console Support Center. This movement presented a chance to Google to simplify its coverage language. Google launches the Open Usage Commons, a new Company for managing Open Source trademarks

Google, in cooperation with numerous academic leaders and its consulting partner SADA Systems, today announced the launch of the Open Usage Commons, a new organization which aims to help open-ended projects handle their trademarks.

As Google’s director of open source Chris DiBona told me, trademarks have increasingly become a problem for open-source projects, not always because there have been legal issues around them, but since commercial entities which want to use the emblem or name of an open-source project in their sites, for example, don’t have the reassurance they are free to use those trademarks.

“One of the things that’s been rearing its ugly head over the past couple years has been trademarks,” he told me. “There’s not a lot of trademarks in open minded applications generally, but especially at Google, and frankly the higher grade, the popular open-ended jobs, you see them more and more over the last five decades. When you have a look at open minded licensing, they don’t handle trademarks at all of the way that they do patents and copyright, even Apache, which is my favourite permit, they essentially say, nope, not touching it, not our problem, you go speak.”

Traditionally, open-source licenses did not cover trademarks because there simply were not a great deal of trademarks in the ecosystem to be concerned about. Among the exceptions was Linux, a trademark that’s currently managed by the Linux Mark Institute on behalf of Linus Torvalds.

Having said that, commercial businesses aren’t sure how to deal with this situation and programmers also don’t know how to react to those companies when they ask them questions regarding their trademarks.

“What we needed to do is provide advice around the way you can share trademarks in precisely the same way that you would discuss patents and copyright in an open-source permit […],” DiBona explained. “And the idea is to basically provide that guidance, you understand, provide this trademarks file, if you will, that you put in your source code.”

Google itself is currently placing three of its open-source trademarks to this new company: the Angular net application framework for mobile, the Gerrit code review tool and also the Istio support net. “All three of these are kind of ideal for this sort of experimentation because they are under active development at Google, they’ve a trademark associated with them, they’ve logos and, sometimes, that a mascot.”

A day or two ago we saw renders of what is allegedly the Google Pixel 5 and now it’s Pixel 5 XL that’s popped up.

The CAD leaves of this Pixel 5 XL come from Twitter user @xleaks7 in collaboration with Pigtou who brought us the vanilla Pixel 5 renders. As you can see the two phones seem very similar – a display using a punch hole in the top-left corner to the selfie camera and a fingerprint reader to the rear keeping company into the dual camera set positioned inside a square-shaped module in the top left corner.

The source does not show the specs of the rear cameras, but among them appears to have an ultrawide angle lens.

Google brings its AI-powered SmartReply feature to YouTube

Google announced today the launching of an upgraded version of SmartReply which will allow creators to immediately and more easily interact with their fans in the remarks.

Google Removes Misleading Ads in Voting-Related Searches | Digital Trends

Google is cracking down on ads that mislead people to malicious sites when they looked up voting information. The company on Monday said it has removed several search ads that unlawfully scammed users into paying up to $129 for voter registration, harvested their personal data including credit card credentials, and installed deceptive add-ons on their computers.

The takedown comes after a report published by the Tech Transparency Project (TTP), a non-profit watchdog, that discovered nearly a third of the more than 600 voting-related search ads on Google were manipulative. The ads — that sit above at the top of the search results — appeared when people looked up common voting terms such as “register to vote,” “vote by mail,” and “where is my polling place.”

A Google spokesperson told Reuters that the company is investigating how these ads slipped through its approval process, which involves a manual review, in the first place.

“We have strict policies in place to protect users from false information about voting procedures, and when we find ads that violate our policies and present harm to users, we remove them and block advertisers from running similar ads in the future,” Google said in a statement sent to Digital Trends.

Most of the ads the TTP found were masquerading as official information hubs. One such ad, hosted by a company called PrivacyWall, charged users $129 for “same-day processing” to register to vote. Another called RegisterMyVote tried to collect a trove of personal data for marketing purposes.

Since ads on Google now employ the same typeface and color scheme as organic search results, it’s also a lot harder for users to tell them apart. “Such ads could have a suppressive effect on voters. Users searching for guidance about elections who instead find themselves on manipulative or confusing sites may eventually give up on finding the information they need,” wrote the non-profit organization in a blog post.

Earlier this year in February, Google pledged to offer voters “quality, authoritative information” on its search engine among several other initiatives for the 2020 presidential elections. It also no longer allows political organizations to micro-target citizens based on their online activities when they buy ad space on Google and YouTube.
