A hot potato: There are few subjects that get people’s blood boiling like the addition of non-fungible tokens to games. Despite the fact that the majority of people are against this practice, many within the industry don’t care about it and will continue to implement their schemes. These are clearly for the benefit players and not for profit. Josef Fares, director of It Takes Two, isn’t a fan. He says he would rather be shot than include NFTs into his games.

Fares has a reputation for speaking his mind, having famously uttered the line “F*ck the Oscars” at the 2017 Game Awards. He clearly had a great time at this year’s event where It Takes Two won Game of the Year , best multiplayer game and Best Family Game.

In an interview with The Washington Post , Faires, he was asked if Hazelight Studios would be following in the footsteps other companies and embrace NFTs and live-service games. “Live service? He said that we won’t have such a thing. Some games are designed specifically for this. I’m not saying that [for] all the games we make — story-based games and most single-player games — should have a focus on replayability. That’s not the point of the game. We already have a problem that people are not even finishing single-player experience games, so why focus on replayability?”

Fares was blunt about NFTs. He said he’d rather be “shot in the knee” to include them in his games than get “shot in a knee”. Let me tell you, whatever decision you make in a game where you have to adjust its design to make the player or do something to make him pay money, that’s wrong. He said, “If you make a [with the goal of telling] story, it’s wrong.” If you asked a CEO of a large company, he’d say that I’m stupid, because companies are all about making money. However, I’d still say no. Gaming is for me .”
