The final episodes of Hannah Montana aired back in 2011, but the Miley Cyrus series lives on in the hearts of its fans. And they’re certainly not afraid of dissecting its plot lines all these years later.
A TikTok video calling out a major plot hole in the show recently went viral and, frankly, we can’t believe it’s taken this long to spot it. In case you forgot, Hannah Montana’s basic premise was that Miley Stewart (Cyrus) was a seemingly regular teenage girl who was actually living a double life as Hannah Montana, a famous pop star. This secret identity was only known by her family—including her dad, Robby Ray Stewart, played by Miley’s actual father, Billy Ray Cyrus—and her closest friends.
But TikTok user @KylieKlunder’s viral video found a serious flaw in the logic about Miley and Robby Ray’s relationship. “Hannah Montana plot hole: Robby Ray Cyrus was Miley Stewart’s dad,” Klunder says. “We know this because Rico goes to their house and says, ‘Miley and Jackson, I need to talk to your dad because my grandma’s a big fan of old, washed-up country singers. Can I please have his autograph?’ Common knowledge that the old country singer is Robby Ray…is Miley and Jackson’s dad.”
“Fast forward to the Jonas Brothers episode,” she continues. “The Jonas Brothers say, ‘Oh, my gosh. You’re Robby Ray, you write all the songs.’ And Hannah Montana says, ‘Yup, my dad, Robby Ray, the old country singer, writes all the songs.'” She also calls out another instance of the connection, too: “Fast forward to the…Silver Booty Award. Hannah Montana wins it. Robby Ray says, ‘I’m so excited to give this to my daughter because I won it so many years ago.'”
Basically, this means the show was stating that Robby Ray was the father of both girls, which of course was technically true and known by the viewers. “Robby Ray, the famous country singer, was both Miley Stewart and Hannah Montana’s dad, and nobody ever put it together!” Klunder states.
Wow, we literally never noticed that either—and according to Twitter, we weren’t alone.
