As an industry leader in the manufacturing and transport of construction materials, Holcim has made a commitment to reducing emissions and its carbon footprint. To that end, Holcim recently signed a letter of intent with Volvo Trucks to purchase 1,000 electric trucks between now and 2030. This is Volvo Trucks’ largest commercial order of electric trucks to date, and the first 130 trucks will be delivered to Holcim in 2023 and 2024.

The agreement between Volvo Trucks and Holcim is a major milestone towards the goal of drastically reducing emissions in the construction and mining industry. The impact of Holcim’s decision is huge, as the switch from diesel to electric trucks could save up to 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide every year. This reduction in emissions is a step towards a more sustainable future and one less problem for the environment to deal with.

Holcim’s commitment to the environment has been evident for years, as the company has won multiple awards for its building innovations. In 2020, Holcim was the recipient of the Contractors’ Choice Award at CONEXPO-CON/AGG; in 2022, Holcim won the bauma Innovation Award for Building Innovation. Now, partnering with Volvo Trucks, Holcim is taking a further step towards sustainability by replacing 1,000 existing diesel trucks with electric Volvo FH trucks running on green electricity.

The Volvo FH Electric trucks that Holcim will be receiving are equipped with some of the industry’s leading safety and efficiency technologies. These trucks feature active safety systems to alert drivers to potential safety risks, advanced autonomous driving technologies to help reduce human error, and clean powertrain technology that allows for greater control over both emissions and fuel efficiency.

By choosing to embrace electric trucks powered by green electricity, Holcim is sending a message to the construction and mining industry that sustainability is no longer just an aspiration, but an obligation. By reducing emissions and fuel consumption, Holcim is setting a good example for others to follow.

At Volvo Trucks, we are proud that Holcim has chosen to partner with us on this journey towards a greener future, and we look forward to helping them reach their goal of reducing emissions by 1,000 electric trucks over the next decade. We hope that other construction and mining companies follow Holcim’s lead and begin transitioning to electric trucks – it’s the only way to make sure we can all work together to protect the environment for years to come.
